Over the years the work of filmmaker Hilary Harris moved steadily from abstraction to social commentary. "Why make films at all?" is the question he poses to himself, and answers by "to give a richer vision of surrounding reality.

"My aim is to lift people out of their preconceptions."

This profile features Harris speaking with film critic and NY Film Festival director Amos Vogel, and includes excerpts from Harris' short films "Seaward the Great Ships", "Generation", "Highways" and "The Squeeze".

These films all illustrate Harris' technique of presenting abstract forms and then revealing them as part of familiar reality, and they illustrate as well Harris' use of non-linear structure.
