Begins with experimental 8mm films (e.g. with Konrad Bayer) in the early 1950s. Close contact with Marc Adrian and Padhi Frieberger. Since 1957 films on 16mm with serial montage techniques. Kurt Kren is regarded (besides Peter Kubelka) as an imporTant pioneer of structural film. From 1964 onwards Kren cooperates with the Viennese Actionists Otto Mühl and Günter Brus, as well as the \"Op\" artist Helga Phillip. 1966 Kurt Kren takes part in the \"Destruction in Art Symposion\", London, in which the Viennese Actionists appear for the first time abroad. First trip to America in 1968, screenings in New York and St. Louis. That same year, Kren participated in a happening entitled Kunst und Revolution (Art and Revolution) at the University of Vienna at which Kren\u2019s films were confiscated by the police and he was discharged from his job at the National Bank. 1970 participant in the International Underground Film Festival, London. 1971 participant in the Film Festival in Cannes. 1972 begins to produce the Boxen (Boxes), published by WolfGang Ernst, which contain a partitur, photographs and one Super-8 film. 1976 comprehensive retrospective in the National Film Theatre, London. 1977 takes part in the Documenta 6, Cassel, and Film as Film in the Kunstverein, Cologne. 1978-1989 Kren Lives in the USA (partly in the car). Extensive travels and presentations as well as lectures at universities and film schools. 1978 retrospective of his complete &oeLig;uvre in Millenium, New York and one year later in the Museum of Modern Art, New York. 1983 a charity concert given by the punk band Really Red collects 1000$ for Kren. From 1983-1989 work as a security officer at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas. 1988 comprehensive show of Kren\u2019s films in the Stadtkino, Vienna. Returned to Vienna in 1989. During the 1990s his work was presented by the mayor museums and cinematheques around the world. 1996 big personale \"Kurt Kren tausendjahrekino\" at the Wiener Secession. 1998 he died in Vienna. Co-founder of the Vienna Institute of Direct Art and the Austrian Filmmakers Cooperative.
